Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Brandon Keith Biggs
Hello,
I have been typing on Word 2016 and even with all the new formatting features off, Word keeps crashing. I will be typing and word will just cut out and go away. It also doesn't save a backup of what I was typing.
I am not sure how to reproduce this, other than by typing in word for a while. Having the new features make Word crash even more, so I think something from the formatting being read is making Word crash. It never used to crash this much at all.
Thanks,

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Nimer Jaber
Hello,

I also have experienced this, although I attributed it to running Word, so I have been uninstalling and reinstalling. I'm glad that others are seeing this as well. I have amny formatting settings turned off, and will turn them on when needed. I have found, however, that Word does actually save a copy, depending on the auto-save settings. I do have to manually go into the temp directory, however, to access them as the recovery feature of Word doesn't see the files there for some reason.

thanks.

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Sean Mealin

Hi,

I also have this problem with Word 2016 and NVDA 2016.2.  It seems to be linked to spelling/grammar mistakes, but I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the problem.  It is very prevalent though, to the point where it is interfering with my ability to get work done.

Where can we download older versions of NVDA?  I need to roll back to 2016.1 until this is fixed.  If I come up with any more information, I'll pass it on.

Thanks

Sean

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Greg Wocher-2

Hello,

I wonder if it has something to do with NVDA's new spelling and grammar functionality? Could what NVDA is doing be conflicting somehow with Microsoft Words ability to check spelling and grammar automatically?

Greg Wocher

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Michael Curran-3
We believe it is caused by #5877 (detection of grammar errors).

However, due to some internal details, it is not enough to just turn off
report grammar errors to make the crash go away. For speech, you will
need to turn off play sounds for spelling errors. If using braille,
you'll also have to turn off report spelling errors.

Obviously this is not a good situation, so we are working on a build to
remove support for grammar errors.

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Michael Curran-3
In reply to this post by austin pinto
Hi,

Please run the following NVDA try build:
https://ci.appveyor.com/api/buildjobs/lnl8rca4vswp8mu6/artifacts/output/nvda_snapshot_try-fixWord-13355,5e83bfa3.exe

This try build is equivalent to NVDA 2016.2, with out support for
grammar errors in Microsoft Word, and also contains the fix for the
Microsoft Word 2007 start-up crash on XP.

Before running this build, it is very important that you reboot your
computer to ensure that Microsoft word is not running, and to ensure it
has not left anything around in memory. Once rebooted, start this build
as a portable or installed copy, and only then open Microsoft Word.

Please let us know if the crash goes away, or if it remains.

Thanks

Mick

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Funny you should mention spellcheck. Word has started for some weird reason
to complain randomly it cannot find the spelling files for dot ie the full
stop, which it never did before the latest nvda. Trouble is its totally
random. It does not actually crash, but leaves the file  marked as
spellchecked when it clearly fell out part way through.
This seems to affect old word versions too, so is obviously a different
issue.

In reply to this post by Brian's Mail list account BY
Brian,

Is that with 2016.2 or the 2016.2.1 which was released tonight?

Regards

Quentin.

Re: Word 2016 crashing with newest version of NVDA

Pete

  Hi

Nvda and espeak don't seem to work properly in thunderbird either.  I had to disable spell checking functions and check spelling as you type to get rid of a buzzing sound.

  See posts about

[nvda] espeak n g no good it sneezes on some words - Mozilla Thunderbird

Additionally, the font has to be set to fixxed with apposed to variable with or elce when using nvda in thunderbird some of the characters arrenn't announced properly.  What I mean about properly is crime will show up as drime.

  Pete
