Hi,

As I know the version of skype that comes with Windows 8 is
inaccessible, but you can use the standard version, so go to skype's
homepage and download the normal version.

Regards,
mk.

Re: Skype on Windows 8.1 seems tobe inaccessibl t NVDAo

Heiko Folkerts
OK, let me get a bit more precise.
Yes, I found out that tabbing through the dialog works, but how do I access
the tools Menu to setuz the sound settings?
In my case every call is interupted immediately after start. The microphone
is configured OK in Windows (I can record sound), but there still seems tob
e a Problem. I a support thread of skype they mentioned checking the sound
settings via the tools menu.

So can we access really all controls in that version?
If soneone has a solution form y skype problem I'd be very happy.
Heiko

Re: Skype on Windows 8.1 seems tobe inaccessibl t NVDAo

Kostadin Kolev-2
Hello Heiko,

If you are a beginner with Windows 8/8.1, I suggest that you read some
documentation, tutorials and similar stuff on the matter, specially if
you are going to use the modern apps. And believe me, sometimes you may
need to, when for example you want to update the modern apps - it is
done via the Windows Store app, witch is also a "modern" app.

For now, to access settings and other stuff, from within an app, press
Windows+C, to open the so called "Charms bar". In it select "Settings".
In the "Settings" menu, one of the commands should be "Settings" or
"Options" or something similar, depending on the modern app in question.
In the modern Skype I think it is called "Options", but I'm not 100
percent sure, because on my PC it is in bulgarian. Select "Options" and
open it with Enter. The modern Skype options appear. Unfortunately
however, for the modern Skype, some of the controls for settings don't
have labels. At least NVDA doesn't see them, but Narrator does, witch is
strange. Anyway, the first combo-box in there is for the selection of a
microphone and the 2nd one - for the speakers. Most of the other
settings are not so important, but you may explore them with Narrator
for the time being. The last 2 check-boxes/toggle buttons however you
may want to look at. The first of them is for sound alerts for incoming
chat messages if you are anywhere in the modern Skype - I keep that ON.
The 2nd is for muting the sound alerts for incoming messages in the
current conversation - I keep that OFF, so Skype will alert me for new
messages even in the current conversation.

Yes, the modern Skype for Windows 8/8.1 is mostly accessible, but not so
usable (and not only for us screen reader users). There are some
features missing, e.g. hotkeys/keyboard commands for at least the
important actions; personalization of the sounds for alerts; screen
sharing; etc. In regards of accessibility however, there is a serious
advantage of the modern Skype in comparison with the desktop one: file
transfer progress is more accessibly reported - it tells us the progress
in percentage.

And now, I'll give you all a link to a tutorial on accessibility for
Windows 8 from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/windows8
There was a page on the Microsoft website with links I think for the
same tutorial in PDF and DOC formats for download, but I can't find it
right now. Actually, it is on the same page - a link with the text
"Download Tutorials". Here's the direct link for the DOC file:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/E/4/7E4154AE-7AC2-4235-A2F1-3D25B1D161CD/Win8_Accessibility_Tutorials.doc
Hope it works. If not - find the link "Download Tutorials" on the page
and start the download from there.

HTH

Best wishes,
Kostadin Kolev

Re: Skype on Windows 8.1 seems tobe inaccessibl t NVDAo

Hello,

Oops, I forgot about that. The incoming calls from the modern Skype, as
well as some other similar notifications from other apps (notifications
with continuous sound) are of the so called "toast notification" type.
They have the bad habit to lower down the sound volume of other apps,
including the screen reader (at least NVDA). To fix this, you'll have to
focus the toast notification that plays that sound and lowers down the
sound volume of other apps. To do so, when that toast notification
appears on the screen, press Windows+V - then the sound from the
notification will stop playing, the volume of other apps (incl. NVDA) is
returned to the normal level and you can interact with that notification
with the TAB key and activating the desired command/action with the
spacebar. At least that is how it is on my system.
