Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Brandon Keith Biggs
Hello,
I see some issues on Github about this, but I'm not quite sure what went on.
I just started noticing this from the time I got my Windows 10 machine at Christmas, it didn't seem to happen on windows 7.

When I press enter and hear output from the prompt, the last line is spelled.
This happens all the time when in the dir and some of the time when using python.
I would like the ability to toggle it, if the other option is to hear passwords typed but not spelling. I use the command prompt all the time, but I type my password maybe once every 6 months or so.
So having my password spoken out is a lot less annoying than spelling of the last line.
Thanks,

Sarah Alawami
Yeah, this has been happening over the last -4 years I've been using nvda and the command prompt. I hear this is normal behavior but I can't except this.

Take care.

Well, it's certainly not intended/normal behaviour. It's a bug, but it's very difficult to fix without breaking other things. The best workaround for now is to turn off speaking of typed characters.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Brandon Keith Biggs
Hello,
Could an addon create a false representation where key echo is off, but nvda is sent the key presses and says them out?

What were the problems with the different options?
Thanks,

Actually, in my case that is off but it still spells everything in the command prompt window. This is still normal according to people I've asked. It's annoying though if this is truly the case.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

James Teh
That's definitely not what I see in Windows 10. With speak typed characters off, I don't get any spelling. So you're seeing something different.

To ask a rather obvious question, when you type characters in command consoles, you definitely don't get any feedback?

So you didn't actually answer my question. Do you get any speech when you type in consoles or not? I want to know whether perhaps speak typed characters is actually not being treated as off for some reason.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Sarah Alawami
Since I have speak typed characters off I get no output in the command line. Until I hit enter, but I do things differently. I do it from the run dialogue. Then I normally get the spellings.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Brandon Keith Biggs
In reply to this post by James Teh
Hello,
Typed words and typed characters both make NVDA repeat in the console.
So if you have either on, there will be repeating.

I would like at least one to work, because I type and read a lot in the console and I really can not function very well with no feedback for my typing.
Thank you,

In reply to this post by Sarah Alawami

  Hi
What you are getting spelled out is the title, it is in all caps.  I get the same here on windows 7 64 bit pro.
I think it is normal for nvda to spell all cap words out.

Thanks,

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

hi
insert +3 turns on / off typed words
I press start go to run type in cmd.exe to get to cmd prompt.
typed words on wont announce the word until you press space after the word.
It doesn't say the word if you press enter though.
Running the cmd.exe from run doesn't read or spell out the title of cmd.exe though.
Running the defrag /? from the run doesn't say any thing may be it opens and closes too fast to read.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

James Teh
That's a good point act'ually. Where this weird behaviour occurs, speak typed words will very probably cause the same effect. For those that still see this with speak typed characters off, do you have speak typed words enabled and does the behaviour stop if you turn it off?

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Sarah Alawami
Yep, it sure does. It's very annoying, and hard to reproduce for some of us.

Take care and be blessed.

To ask a rather obvious question, when you type characters in command consoles, you definitely don't get any feedback?

Hello,
I see some issues on Github about this, but I'm not quite sure what went on.

Thanks,

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the last line of the console when speak typed characters is on

Pete
In reply to this post by James Teh
   hi

I use speak typed characters on and words off primarily, some times
turn off both. speak type characters off and speak type words off.  I
don't seem to be getting the last line repeating thing in cmd.exe here.

I do get in Thunderbird the subject is read 3 times when I hit enter on
a message to read it.  If I alt tab in to a message it says the subject
when alt tab to it and again it repeats it but only one time.

some times  in the diskpart program I have to move the nvda reading
cursor to the window to review it.  some times the reading cursor is
there all ready.  This happens with most windows.

When I do alt + enter for properties nvda's reading cursor is there
and some times not.  This is random.

Some times I can't turn on the review with ins + key pad 7 I first
have to use ins + key pad 1 then hit a review cursor key after that nvda
will allow the ins + 7 to turn on the review mode.

Some times moving the review cursor takes the reviewer to blank
window or some where were every thing is blank.

I am using nvda with mostly default settings except I changed the
speed and changed the mouse announcement to words rather than paragraph.

I use nvda latest, Thunderbirdthunderbird and firefox latest o 64 bit
pro.

I think there is a random element here as well.  Just now I tried
with both off from cmd prompt defrag /? and with both off it doesn't
spell out the top title.  With characters on and words off it started
spelling out the title again.  with characters off and words on it
doesn't spell out the title.  and with both chars and words off goes
back to not spelling out.
It's a mystery.  This is just running the defrag /? from the cmd line.

   Thanks!
   Pete

Yep I forgot I have chars on, so you are seeing what I see when I run defrag or my wsus off line updater. It will start spelling all of it even though I didn't type anything at least with the second program I use.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the lastline of the console when speak typed characters is on

Brian's Mail list account BY
You mentioned  tbird. I often see this 2 or three announcing issue on all
sorts of lists and changed displays. In some cases it seems to be triggered
by a tool tip popping up and refreshing that line, or maybe the selection is
slow, but normally now if its that its got the selected instead spoken.

I think therefore that these  things are a different problem entirely from
the  spelling of command window items under some circumstances.
I've only encountered this a few times in windows 7, and put it down to lag
in the system somewhere making nvda think the letters were not all part of a
word.
I always use speak  characters on, so that might encourage it.
On normal use 7 is quite good, and its normally when a dos program opens
its own doss display that things go a bit wonky, and of course nobody would
then know what the program is going to do, so one has to put up with some
weird effects.

Re: Problem with NVDA spelling everything on the lastline of the console when speak typed characters is on

Sarah Alawami
Ok, I managed to reproduce it. I have characters turned off. I first did wsus offline updater   and that didn't do it. I then launched defrag from the run dialogue. My machine was a bit laggy but it still spelled "invoking defragmentation" Here is a link to the m4a I made. Hope it is clear enough.

As I write this it starts to spell "predfragmentation information volume c." Here is the dropbox link. I hope this works. If not keep trying until the file is uploaded.
