[Nvda-dev] What's happenning with latest Firefox/Thunderbird?

Hrvoje Katić
Hello,

I use latest NVDA     trunk with latest misc dependences as well as latest nightly build of Firefox and Thunderbird 3, however in latest nightly builds of FF and Thunderbird something seams to be wrong. When starting both Mozilla products, I get "Microsoft's Send error report" dialog, and after choosing "don't send" my system simply hangs or becomes unusable. I checked for updates in both product this morning, but the same problem. I also updated to latest NVDA commit. So what's wrong?

Best regards

Hello,
I have just downloaded latest nightly build dated 04/04/08 and it works
fine for me.
Perhaps the update feature is not working as it should.
BTW here are the links I am using:
installer:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.0pre.en-US.win32.installer.exe
zip:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.0pre.en-US.win32.zip

I have seen a few reports that with firefox 3.0 beta 5 some people are
experiencing crashes like this but not with the latest builds.
Can you please try to verify it by updating manually?

Well, now I uninstalled both programs and reinstalled with latest nightly
builds, but the same problem happens. I also detected that this problem is
not present when NVDA is not running.

Hello Hrvoje, et al,

If you do get crashes in Thunderbird or Firefox, and you get the
"Mozilla Crash Reporter" window, please please submit those crashes to
us. We datamine these crash reports, and it helps us find possible
regressions/crashes and fix them.

Hello,

Unfortunatelly, I didn't get Mozilla Crash Reporter dialog. I just got
Microsoft's error reporting dialog and then the application crashed. Now I
also deleted NVDA and downloaded again from SVN repository, and I copied
MiscDeps from April 4th, but my problem is still not resolved.

Re: [Nvda-dev] What's happenning with latest Firefox/Thunderbird?

Michael Curran
In reply to this post by Hrvoje Katić
Hi,

Again like usual, please send me the specs of your system -- OS version,
service packs. Are you running either NVDA or firefox as a different user?

I see a lot of people on both nvda and nvda-dev lists are having this
problem, but as usual, Jamie, Peter and I are not.

Perhaps tomorrow I might make some debug versions of the dlls available
and then get people to send me the log files produced. Obviously
something very strange is going on and I would like to fix it as soon as
possible.

Could you please check that your virtualBuffer.dll and
VBufBackend_gecko_ia2.dll has a creation date of April 4th or later?

What it really sounds like to me is that for some reason people are
getting older virsions of the dlls which definitely would crash with
latest NVDA trunk.

However... could you please try opening thunderbird with out NVDA
running, and then open NVDA and start using thunderbird. When exactly
does Thunderbird crash when you do this?

You could also try this with Firefox, but please focus on the location
bar before starting NVDA so that the buffers aren't automatically loaded.

Thanks
Mick

Re: [Nvda-dev] What's happenning with latest Firefox/Thunderbird?

Hrvoje Katić
Hi Mick,

Yeah I'm using latest DLLs, because I downloaded MiscDeps last time
yesterday. I'm using Windows XP SP2, and I'm running with administrative
rights. I didn't have this problem before April fourth, after my FF and
Thunderbird were updated. Then I also downloaded latest MiscDeps for NVDA,
however the problems are still here.

Hi Mick,

I can confirm these crashes, too. And the Mozilla Crash Reporter does
not come up.

I'm available on irc.mozilla.org#accessibility if you want to work on
this with me.

Re: [Nvda-dev] What's happenning with latest Firefox/Thunderbird?

Michael Curran
Hi all,

I am very sorry. Totally my fault. I had left some debugging code in
VBufBackend_gecko_ia2.dll from when I was testing possibilities of using
IAccessible2 with out dll registration. To be specific, Firefox and
thunderbird are crashing because it can't find ia2.dll in *my* home
directory :)

I will zip up a new misc dependencies and make it available as soon as
possible.

Thanks
Mick

Hi all,

Please download the latest nvda-misc-dependencies package (2008-04-05-1)
which contains the new VBufBackend_gecko_ia2.dll with the fix.

Again I apologize for this.

Please let me know if this does fix the problem.

The url again for the package is:
http://trac.nvda-project.org/wiki/MiscellaneousDependencies

Please double check the date on the file name of the zip file ... it
must be 20080405-1.

Mick

nvda since the buffers were emplamented.  I've submitted crash reports.
I'll try the latest nightly build and see what happens and report back.

For those that are running the snapshots, can we replace the ia2.dll
