[NVDA-dev] Regarding availability of application specific NVDA configurations

Suman Dogra

Hello

Is there any plan of implementation of application specific configuration in NVDA.

Sometimes it becomes difficult to work with the settings that are not necessary for one application but are required in other.  For a very simple example, on setting the line indentation to work in MS Word, NVDA starts announcing the indentation on web pages as well.  This announcement is actually not required on IE.

Thanks

Suman

I thought what was happening is that people would write add on with the over
ridden or new features in them for their use. I suspect though that this is
beyond most of us to do. I have thought for a long time that online and
offline apps that use formatting need to be seperated in the dialogue
section. Its often required that word needs to be verbose where IE needs to
be lean and mean. OK one can toggle things back and forth, but its laborious
when using both at the same time, ie importing web content into word etc.

Writing add-ons to set app-specific configuration options is a terrible
sinful hack and shouldn't even be considered, let alone put forth as the
main/only way of doing so.

A general app-specific config system would be far better than this, as a
lot of apps refuse classification into such a simple taxonomy.

Hi.
The plan is to first implement support for configuration profiles which
can be switched manually. We can consider how to handle automatic
switching after that. My concern with automatic switching based on
application name is that these days, many applications perform several
vastly different tasks or have the same executable name because they use
the same launcher/toolkit; e.g. OpenOffice or web apps. This will only
become more common, which makes using application name pretty useless.

Re: [NVDA-dev] Regarding availability of application specific NVDA configurations

Manish Agrawal
Isn't this similar to loading app specific app modules? For applications that have the same name for different actions, how do we load the correct app module?
In the process of looking for an app module, can we also look for config settings for that app?

Yes. However, config settings have a lot less granularity than app
modules; app modules can choose to only apply tweaks based on criteria
specified in code. There's also no equivalent of a global plugin for
config settings.

Have you a release plan, or something like a timeline for this

Nothing specific at this stage. I know roughly how it should be
designed, but haven't had the time to implement it.

[NVDA-dev] Place Marker Addon

Alexis Robin
Hey folks,

In my remember, someone developped a place marker addon. Am I wrong?
Could someone indicate a link to download it please?
By the way, as specified in ticket #88, "Freedom Scientific's patent has
been invalidated, see
http://www.gwmicro.com/News_&_Events/Latest_News/?newsNo=266
I think this should allow NVDA to officially have such a feature
implemented, without complications."

Re: [NVDA-dev] Place Marker Addon

Noelia
Hello. I created this add-on. It's in development. Recently I added
IAccessible Value in the name of the file where place markers for a
specific document are stored, because I use EPUBReader to read ebooks
and I needed bookmarks for different chapters, which before this
feature were considered as the same page.
I have to associate a different gesture so that people can use sticky
keys when deleting a bookmark. Now control+NVDA+shift+k is use to save
a place marker and, if you press it two times, the bookmark under the
cursor is deleted.
I don't use overlay classes in this plugin, because I get errors in
this way, but the scripts only work in virtual documents as web pages
or PDF.
You can go to next and previous bookmark, by pressing control+shift+k
and shift+NVDA+k.
You can also save a specific text to search on web pages, and the
add-on appends a menu for opening the folder containing place markers
and specific texts to search.
There are mods for this plugin too. You can download my last version
(in development) from
http://bit.ly/YO5lfe
Best regards.

As a side note, please do not start a new topic by replying to an
existing one and changing the subject line.  This entire thread is now
hidden inside the previous one about application-specific configuration.

Re: [NVDA-dev] Place Marker Addon

Noelia
Hello, now this add-on is updated.
It can not be used in word documents at this moment. It's only for
virtual documents like web pages or PDF.
The main changes in this version, which is also in development for testing, are:
1. File documentation is in HTML. Now you can open the file instead of
documentation folder, as propossed on ticket 2694:
http://community.nvda-project.org/ticket/2694
2. The add-on menu is under preferences menu instead of NVDA main
menu. This is a suggestion made by an italian person who has mailed
me.
3. Now we can delete the current bookmark by pressing control+shift+NVDA+delete.
4. NVDA+k copies to the clipboard the name (without extension) of the
corresponding file wher place markers could be saved. It can be useful
for deleting or if we want to copy manually this file, after opening
bookmarks or specific search folder.

Documentation is partially translated to some languages, but this is
not updated.
Regards.

Hi,
Could you post the URL to your add-on so other add-on devs can
review it? Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S.  Do you have a repo of your add-on somewhere so devs
can import this to our add-on repos?
