NVDA Snapshots: questions and suggestions

pleveris
Hello,

First, I need to say that I started using NVDA Snapshots really
recently and I didn't pay much attention to it for quite long time, so
my thoughts about these after using for a few weeks would be as
follows:

1. Error sound using Snapshots? I think this would be somehow related
to the fact that it is a Snapshot, not an ofitial release, however,
NVDA About dialog shows that difference... So, why these error sounds
in Snapshots are required? And, is there any way to tell NVDA don't
play these?

2. Updates using Snapshots? I think it would be a good idea for those
who are using various Snapshots (Next/Master/RC) to get updates when
new Snapshots are released. Any thoughts?

Thanks.
Sincerely,
Paulius Leveris

Re: NVDA Snapshots: questions and suggestions

Joseph Lee
Hi,
Error tones: there is an internal global flag in Python named "__debug__"
(without quotes) that is used when Python is run with no optimizations
applied (.pyc files). Because snapshots are meant to gather test data and
refine features, the debug flag is always turned on.
Update notices: the best way to get a glimpse of what's new and changed is
subscribing to GitHub and looking at source code change notices.
Cheers,
Joseph

It's already possible to check for and install updates from within
snapshot builds.

Just an observation:
Next versions only update to a newer Next version.
Master versions only update to a newer Master version.
RC versions only update to a newer RC version.

I do not agree with the last one... For me, it should update, automatically,
to the Stable version as soon as it is released...

Re: NVDA Snapshots: questions and suggestions

Development mailing list

New snapshots are updated, though as they are built only once a day unless
one is forced in the case of a fault now and again. I disagree about errors.
as we all know what an error sound is it does help to track down any
problems. Whereas an error sound might indicate an error, in many cases it
might be benign, in that its some kind of time out or an error that simply
does not matter to the system. I tend to just ignore them, though I have to
say the one in some search files in windows 7 is a little irritating after
all this time, it does no real harm.
If you are up to fiddling the error sound is defined in a wav file in the
waves folder in nvda, so can be changed to silence if you want, but it will
be overwritten on an update.

I have found the master snaps to be very reliable, and tend now to use this
instead of the stable or rc release. The RC in the snaps list still has
errors turned on but the  rc that is linked to from messages seems to be
almost exactly the same as the
release version as it has no error sounds.
Next snaps quite often have oddities and I tend to monitor these on older
machines like xp since I'd like advance warning when XP will not be usable
with nvda

I think that will probably be when they go Python 3.

Well, Maybe it should flag it up but you might want to stay on an rc branch
as well, as there should be an rc that looks like the current release.

Re: NVDA Snapshots: questions and suggestions

Development mailing list
In reply to this post by Joseph Lee
I think the confusion here is this.
There are in fact two RC strains. One is the one in the snapshot page, the
other is the one linked to from the emails in the lists. The one in the
lists goes via the normal donate page and is updated to stable, but the
other one stays on the rc branch. They have different names, one is named as
the full version with rc in the name the other is rc and one of those
horribly incomprehensible numbers that is given to all releases in master
and next.
