Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Paolo Leva
Hello,

We are working on a new synthetic speech product dedicated to NVDA, based on
the voices from Acapela Group and we are looking for beta testers. I am
using this list for the beta announcement as suggested by Michael Curran, as
we would like to start with a limited but engaged amount of beta testers,
even though the beta is publicly available.

The product is called Acapela TTS Voices for NVDA, and is already available
for download at this address:

http://www.acapela-nvda.com/download/

We currently supports 13 languages. We also provide 2 level of qualities.
The Colibri version of voices is slightly more robotic but much better in
reading at higher speech rate and is delivered as a small download of just
few megabytes per voice. The High-Quality version of the voice have a
clearer and more pleasant timbre with a larger download file of few hundreds
megabytes.

This beta version will function until end of January 2015, after that we
will either release the full product, or provide a new improved beta,
depending on the feedback we get.

The product is currently only in English, we will provide localization later
on. Should you be interested in helping us with localization, please contact
us.

Please direct all feedback and questions to this address:
[hidden email]

Some more information on the product is already available via the FAQ on the
website:
http://www.acapela-nvda.com/

Cheers,

Paolo

Hi,

Without testing further, the first thing I can see is that there are no
french voices there.

Re: Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Alex H.
In reply to this post by Paolo Leva
Hi Paolo,

First, the good. The TTS seems nice and responsive, especially with
the colibri voices. The voices themselves are nice to listen to as
well.

The bad: There's a bug in the pitch synth settings ring, so using the
ring to adjust pitch only can increase to 20%, or as low as 10%. If I
go into NVDA's voice dialog, I can change pitch as expected. The
volume, rate, and voice params from the ring work fine.

No auto language switching support; will this be added in future?

The pause when spelling words is a bit long. If there's a way to
remove that, I would like that very much.

Thanks, and keep up the great work.

One note on this synthesizer. When in twitter, it reads rt as Route. Is there a way to disable this functionality?

Also, pitch doesn't stick between restarts of NVDA, and there's random
rate changes and I need to go in and set things back the way I like.

Re: Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Joseph Lee
Hi,
I'm thinking this might be either the driver itself or the code may not be
using synth settings ring code correctly (by the way, if you do install the
driver, you can access the Python code).
Cheers,
Joseph

In reply to this post by governor staten-2
Is not this the same issue as on Microsoft voices, where every abbreviation
is expanded no matter what it actually really is part of?
also not been to the site, but one assumes by the use of the word product,
that eventually, this will be a commercial product. No problem with that,
but wondered what price point might be involved, roughly.

Re: Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Greg Wocher
Hello,
I am using Ryan or Heather. They are both pretty good. I to experience
the random slow downs with the speech rate. I usually just use control
plus alt plus N to restart NVDA and that clears it up.

Re: Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Joseph Lee
In reply to this post by Kevin Cussick
Hi,
Found the problem (I think): I'm thinking the issue is that each voice has
default setting, and when you change voices or do something with say all,
Acapela will resort to default values for that particular voice. This is
quite a major flaw with the way the driver is designed - I may need to run a
full traceback against synth settings ring to see if it is indeed the
Acapela synth driver (besides, their code may have not been optimized for
latest NVDA release and uses some odd Python syntax that suggests it was
just a Python rewrite of something written in languages such as C++).
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Looking for beta tester for a new speech synthesiser dedicated to NVDA

Joseph Lee
Hi Peter,
I think this discussion may have its place here (there is something that is
under development in core that may affect synthesizers later). But I think
you are right: I'd like to second Peter's suggestion for moving the Acapela
discussion to the add-ons list (I sent bug reports and code review comments
to Acapela add-on developers).
Cheers,
Joseph
