Kindle: Supposed supported books don't work with NVDA

Noelia
Hi, I have books described by Amazon as compatible with screen readers,
but I can't read them with NVDA 2017.1 or the last master.
Today I have bought one of them, and I can cancel the request in Amazon
during 14 days.
Is something that I should do? I could read with NVDA in the first
version of Kindle announced on the NV Access website, but not in other
versions.

In the user guide of the master branch is announced that:

 > NVDA supports reading and navigating books in Amazon Kindle for PC.
 > This functionality is only available in Kindle books designated with
"Screen Reader: Supported" which you can check on the details page for
the book.

If this doesn't work for all the announced books, I think this should be
documented in the user guide, for instance saying that "This
functionality could be only available in some of the Kindle books
designated with "Screen Reader: Supported".
Thanks.

Felix G.
Hello,
I found out this only works for books supporting Enhanced Typesetting. This will be shown on the book's product page.
Kind regards,

Noelia
Hi, many thanks.
Now Amazon describes supported books as ""Screen Reader: Supported"",
instead of "Enhanced Typesetting", and this will be documented in the
user guide of NVDA 2017.2. Please see this issue:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/6982

All the best for you.

So is this going to be ultimately a Kindle problem or an nvda one? Seems
stupid to me that there should be any restriction at all unless the text is
just pictures of course. Brian

Re: Kindle: Supposed supported books don't work with NVDA

Noelia
I don't know, but I think it can be due to Kindle changes not notified
to NV Access.
I changed some code in the app module, and the tree interceptor didn't
work in a "supported book".

Re: Kindle: Supposed supported books don't work with NVDA

James Teh
What exact version of Kindle are you testing with? Also, can you please provide the names of the books you're testing (or even better, their web pages on amazon.com) and also the developer info (NVDA+f1) for the book area (the control where the book content should appear)? Thanks.

Hi Noelia,

I just tested with the same build of Kindle and was able to read screen reader supported books. From the dev info, it seems that Kindle thinks your books are not screen reader supported for some reason. Can you please try removing the books from your Kindle app and downloading them again? It's possible that Kindle downloaded an earlier version of the book for some reason. In that case, downloading the book again should fetch the new version.

Jamie

Noelia
Hi, I've removed and downloaded a book and it doesn't work.
Tested with NVDA 2017 and source-master-0889f95

Maybe an issue with certain books, since on the spanish mailing list
people have asked about Kindle support for NVDA.

Okay. Thanks for the information. I'll follow this up with Amazon.

Hi Jamie, I didn't pay attention to the sender and thought you were
replying to this issue, that I think it's related to this, since the
mentioned books are spoken by Kindle, not by NVDA:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7064

Thank you. I'll forward this on the NVDA's spanish mailing list.

That issue might be related, but the reporter doesn't specify whether they checked that the books they're reading are designated as Screen Reader: Supported. It's possible they aren't, in which case this very likely won't work.
