Custom NVDA master snapshot powered by wxPython 4 is ready for testing

Joseph Lee

Hi everyone,

A custom NVDA master snapshot powered by wxPython 4 is now available for testing. Similar to my other snapshots, this snapshot is equivalent to current master snapshot except:

  • Powered by wxPython 4 (latest development snapshot as of today).
  • Does not support updates (automatic nor manual).
  • GUI front-end is working. You may run into wx.Yield issues.
  • Add-ons that include their own graphical user interfaces, such as Place Markers, Remote, and old versions of Windows 10 App Essentials will not work properly. I’ll release a Windows 10 App Essentials snapshot that does work with this custom snapshot.

The purposes of releasing this snapshot are:

  • To showcase NVDA powered by wxPython 4.
  • Test and uncover issues that should be resolved before it is incubated in NVDA next snapshots, especially GUI such as control placement, alignment and others.
  • To let add-on writers prepare their add-ons to work with new and changed things in wxPython 4.

This custom snapshot is not intended for:

  • Users using stable builds of NVDA.
  • Users using current master snapshots and plan not to test really bleeding-edge code i.e. anyone not using next snapshots nor have experience with running NVDA from source code should NOT use this snapshot.
  • To be installed on your computer (please use it as a temp copy).

Snapshot link:

http://www.josephsl.net/files/bin/nvda_snapshot_wxPy4-20170427.exe

Bug reports should be sent as comments to GitHub issue 7077 at:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7077

Cheers,

Joseph

Brian's Mail list account BY
The problem with using nvda as a temp copy nowadays is that a lot of
functionality is lost compared to the old xp and to a lesser extent, 7, due
no doubt to both uia and permissions issues.

Hi, about placeMarkers, I've post a release for testing with your
snapshot, and for now I don't see problems specific for this modified
version of the add-on.
I've just changed this:
1. Use except RuntimeError instead of except wx.PyDeadObjectError:
2. Use self.Center(wx.BOTH | wx.Center) instead of self.Center(wx.BOTH |
wx.CENTER_ON_SCREEN)
Thanks.

Re: Custom NVDA master snapshot powered by wxPython 4 is ready for testing

Joseph Lee
Hi,
Can anyone test Noelia's branch to see if there's difference in how the dialogs are shown?
To Noelia: I'd advise using a branch for it at the moment until wxPython 4 makes its way to NVDA master snapshots.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Custom NVDA master snapshot powered by wxPython 4 is ready for testing

Joseph Lee
In reply to this post by Joseph Lee

Hi,

April 28th update has been posted. This snapshot uses newer wxPython snapshot and fixes Configuration Profiles dialog problem where it could not be opened a second time.

Download link:

http://www.josephsl.net/files/bin/nvda_snapshot_wxPy4-20170428.exe

I and Jamie are still talking to wxPython community regarding wx.Yield problem.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,
At the moment the front-end (GUI) is working. We cannot proceed with this
until wx.Yield problem is resolved or a suitable workaround is found.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Custom NVDA master snapshot powered bywxPython 4is ready for testing

Brian's Mail list account BY
Only when I  installed the latest next yesterday on XP it can up with errors
in explorer intermittently and needed to be restarted to clear them.
The version I just downloaded was OK is working as portable, but seemed to
crash windows 7 completely after playing an mp3 file twice and so I'm back
on master  again on windows 7.

Unfortunately due to the complete silence and inability for any  key to work
I had to use the power button to get the system back up.

Very old.
