Crashing when updating master branch installed copy

Brian's Mail list account BY
Twice in the last few days, when the newly installed copy is run after the
update, the machine locks up and has to be  shut down on the button on the
computer.
The effect is hard to predict, but I did wonder whether some kind of
termination of the system happens to occur mid way in a process in this
circumstance or something. I'm using windows 7 64 bit and it seems to be
totally unimportant what applications are running at the update time.

I'm just placing this out there in case others have a similar issue. I'll
monitor it and see if I can get a meaningful log out in due course.

Re: Crashing when updating master branch installed copy

One guess might be an antivirus program getting in the way? I have had trouble with short lived files (created during visual studio builds) being interfered with by antivirus / antimalware applications.

Could you create a github issue and attach the log? I'm not sure that we can solve it, from this, but I think as a first step we can see if we can introduce some more logging around this area to give us some indication as to why the installer is not able to copy those files.

Re: Crashing when updating master branch installed copy

In reply to this post by Brian's Mail list account BY
Hi all.
I have also seen something similar happening using next on windows 8
and more worryingly when updating from 2017.1 to 2017.2 on windows 10.
The UAC dialogue pops up and the install seems to fail after that (but
at least for 2017.2 the installed coppy is reported as 2017.2 after
restarting NVDA).

Re: Crashing when updating master branch installed copy

Brian's Mail list account BY
Yes, I am using 7, and the log seems to show some files unable to copy yet
the installed copy when windows is rebooted seems to be the latest one.

I do not see any screen, but then maybe that is because at that time its
effectively running in a portable mode so it can update the folders normally
in use?
