BlindExtra add-on/remote access trojan: official statement from the NVDA add-ons community

Joseph Lee

Hi fellow developers,

Some of you may have heard of BlindExtra add-on. After hearing security reports about this add-on and after witnessing a case where someone have gained access to someone else’s computer and wrote Skype messages, it became clear that the best thing to do is tell folks to uninstall this add-on.

The official statement from the add-ons community can be found at:

http://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/blindExtra.en.html

Also, I and Derek added a section on our add-ons webpage called “Community announcements” where important announcements from the community will be posted.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Mohamed

I'm greatful that this addon has finally been exposed. Someone's SAPI 5 was broken when they uninstalled it, and it took a very long time to figure out what was going on, and it turned out it was because of Blind Extra. I won't even go in to the potential GPL violations.

derek riemer

The GPL doesn't even matter here, because this addon is a Trojan. Simply stay away from it at all costs.

In part, I don't know if we should waste time putting add-ons created by
unknown sources on black lists.
It's fine, but all we should be careful downloading and sharing add-ons,
and it's recommended installing add-ons just from trust sources, in the
NVDA's user guide, as well as on the community add-ons website.
I have look quickly part of the mentioned add-on, and it's sad to see
the code calling exe files without knowing what they do.
It's really a risk.
Thanks.

The reason we did it for this one was to inform people of a possible danger.

Thanks.

Re: BlindExtra add-on/remote access trojan: official statement from the NVDA add-ons community

Noelia
Thank you. I say this since sometimes I think that people asks about non
updated add-ons, or add-ons posted on a repo which contains obsolete
add-ons, or if someone finds a problem in a program using NVDA, the
person asks if an add-on exists for this, without looking the community
website or NVDA issues.
I would announce this on the spanish list. The add-on is translated into
Spanish too.

And I would like that people understand that add-ons

Re: BlindExtra add-on/remote access trojan: official statement from the NVDA add-ons community

Noelia
Yes, you can review Emoticons.
Don't worry for the cut sentence. Just I saw Blind Extra and it's a
risk, it seems dangerous.
Thanks.

Re: BlindExtra add-on/remote access trojan: official statement from the NVDA add-ons community

derek riemer

According to one person, it replaced every file they could find on their computer with a file called crash.exe. I am not sure how many files it did this to as it would have to override things that were in use but this user claimed this.

I would announce this on the spanish list. The add-on is translated into

And I would like that people understand that add-ons

It's really a risk.

The official statement from the add-ons community can be found at:

Also, I and Derek added a section on our add-ons webpage called
“Community announcements” where important announcements from the
community will be posted.

Thanks.

Antony Stone
That does seem at least a little implausible, if taken literally, since it's
not possible to have two or more files in one directory with the same name,
therefore "every file they could find on their computer" could not be named
"crash.exe".

I and Joseph felt it best to warn people to stay away given the code we saw, and reports from some like Tiler after running it over in a VM and looking at what it did, plus the viruses found by multiple AV programs. It is possible it's not a virus, but at this point, unlikely.

Sounds at the very least to be a bit of a cock up.
Where did this add on come from, I've never heard of it.
